Points: Final Paper: Worth a total of 100 points
Purpose:
Conducting research and capstone projects requires a significant time and effort commitment. Effective communication of your topic interest to your peers and faculty will aid in refinement of your written project. This assignment will encourage students to be able to explain their project progress in a written format. You will submit a final report that you compiled, explained and supported (with references and/or data) in a written format.
Objectives:
- Construct a written project
- Present a narrative paper with supporting information as a final compilation of your project idea and progress, in a neat, easy to read format.
- Read peer draft projects
- Provide constructive criticism for the written portion of the projects
- Using peer constructive criticism, revise your written project for final submission by the final due date!
Written Assignment:
-
- Create a document according to the writing guidelines outlined in the syllabus. The paper length is restricted to no more than 20 pages (not including graphs/tables, references and other resources).
-
- Please use a technical writing format and avoid layman’s terminology (unless it is a direct quote). Avoid the use of first person (I, me) for your writing, unless it is pertinent to your project. Use citations in APA format to reference information supporting your research. Each section should be clearly identified and should follow the assigned sequence. Your paper should be neatly presented and free from grammatical and/or formatting errors. Points will be deducted for missing sections (listed below), not following directions and not meeting requirements specific to your project type.
-
- At a minimum your document should include:
- Cover sheet following requirements for APA style. Please include your project title, your name, your professor’s name, date of submission, and recognition to any other significant participants in your project—this might be another professor, a farm, an organization, etc.). This page should not have a page number. Format all remaining pages with page numbers and a running head as indicated in APA style. The coversheet should be included in the same electronic file as your paper submission. Separate files will result in point deductions.
- Abstract/Summary: The summary defines your entire project – needs, goals, objectives, and budget – within a paragraph or, at most, one page. Remember that it is this summary that is usually read first. If you haven’t adequately described your project, it may be the only part that ever gets read. For this project, please limit your abstract/summary to 2500 characters, with spaces, for all submissions in this course. It must be concise, compelling, and clear! Please review the example abstracts that were provided at the beginning of the course. These abstracts are from previous student projects and are good examples of how a semester assignment can be summarized in a few words. EQS 492 Equine Capstone Assignment.
- Statement of problem/needs/objectives/hypothesis: regardless of project type, you should have one paragraph that is persuasive and informative enough to convince the reader that your project is worthy of pursuing. Either the objectives or the actual problem researched are outlined in this paragraph.
- Literature Review/Survey of media/Justification/Introduction: In this section you will provide previously published materials that support your statement of needs or objectives or problem. Included will be a hypothesis or general question regarding your project. For instance, the purpose of completing a survey could be described as providing an analysis of human perceptions regarding a particular topic. Are there other surveys/research articles that support your hypothesis? What about the topic in general? A research project or proposal should be justifiable by published scientific research and/or media scan. Use this section to frame your overall project. This should be completed by the draft submission date!
- Project Narrative/Materials and Methods/Results and Discussion: In essence this is your chance to explore the entire project in a discussion of the what, why, how, and final outcomes of your project. This should be your largest component. You may also use this section to compare your work to other management principles, research or outcomes from events. You should be able to critically analyze your project in this section.
- Other sections (optional): Many projects need other specially labeled sections including: Budget projections; Timeline and explanation of the timeline; description of pitfalls or problems with the project or outcomes; in depth analysis or your outcomes. While these are presented as “optional”, please consider your project carefully—most projects have had some form of pitfall or issue that you solved during the process of completing your project.
- Implications/conclusions: In this section you will state, briefly (1 paragraph), what your project means, or highlight the importance of your analysis/project.
- Personal Reflection: This section is an open-ended discussion of your reflections on your work and progress in this course. As this is a reflection, you may write in first person. There is no page limit to this section, and this section does not contribute to the total page limit. Reflect on the following areas by asking yourself: How is my performance in the…? What would I change about the project? What future directions would I take the project idea?
-
- Question/Topic development
- Background or information seeking
- Project organization
- Analysis of the outcomes
- Synthesis of the written aspect
- Documentation of progress and data
- Communication during the project
-
- Acknowledgements: This is your chance to give credit to individuals who helped with the project. This may be written in first person.
- Literature cited (references): Every project should have references for at least section iv (above).
