In this situation I will apply the Lewin’s change theory. The role of spiritual care as the new position statement is evidently challenging the status quo. It created force of resistance from the committee members. As a leader, understanding that resistance is usually driven by various factors is essential in diffusing a conflict. In this instance, the nurse leader must assess the reasons underlying the committee members’ reaction and resistance to change. Perhaps, they are afraid because it challenges their own values and beliefs. It could also be related to fear of failure due to insufficient knowledge as to the effectivity of the spiritual care or how the community welcomes it. Or it may simply be related to lack of trust on the new leader, failure to understand the reason for change and how it will benefit the community as a whole or they might even be afraid that the influence they once had over the committee may be gone because of the new leader. These are important areas to identify and from these the new leader can address each of the committee’s concern(s) that puts them at a vulnerable place resulting in resistance. Once the committee members’ feel heard and valued, they will be more open to collaboration and willing to listen to the value of this new change and how it will impact the community as a whole. Gently reminding them of the vision of the community outreach committee would also be vital. As a change leader, acknowledging how each individual behave and engage in complex environment is important to foster collaboration. Only then can planning and implementation of change take place (freezing). It must also be consistently evaluated to ensure favorable outcome. Constant support and re-assurance must also be provided to the key stakeholders of change for sustainability (refreezing). Change will only happen if everyone feels valued and respected, which creates an opportunity for team-reflection thereby allowing one to acknowledge the reason why the committee was established in the first place (Barker, 2016).

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “spiritual care is considered an essential part of the overall care provided to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.” The meaning of spirituality and spiritual care among nurses is culturally influenced by many factors, such as the nurse’s ethical background, religious affiliations, level of education, and clinical expertise. Moreover, a different nursing specialist has different perceptions of spirituality and spiritual care. For example, hospice and palliative care nurses have a better knowledge of spiritual care role. The American Holistic Nursing Association defines nursing as “all nursing practice that has the whole person as to its goal” (Thornton,2012). To address the issue of nurses arguing about the role of spiritual care during the first community outreach committee meeting. This problem can be solved with the creation of a plan for a change that needs to be done by scanning, reflecting, and integrating critical information into a plan for action. It is essential to gather some information about nurses’ perceptions of spiritual care and why they do not want to support the position statement of the spiritual care nursing role. I will ask questions and provide them with some support material about the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements (2015): provision 1, Interpretive Statement 1.4, titled “The right to Self Determination,” affirms the nurses’ role and responsibility in providing care and support at the end of life. Nurses’ roles and responsibilities for consideration at the end of life are grounded in the fundamentals of excellent practice and clinical ethics.
For a second meeting, I will invite one member from the American Holistic Nurses Association to give a speech about how Holistic Nurses as a specialty practice recognizes the interconnectedness of the body, mind, spirit, emotions, environment, relationships, and social and cultural aspects of life. All the nurses in the meeting need to remember that nursing is a profession of service, and we have to seek and address the spiritual needs of patients and look at them as a whole entity. Nurses must not be afraid of approaching spiritual topics with their patients. Simply interventions such as prayer, reading a scripture, presence, and active listening can improve patient outcomes and should regularly be integrated into the patients’ plan of care.
